Jamila Lyiscott: 3 ways to speak English
Stop what you’re doing and watch this. Especially if you have a problem with AAVE or broken English.
Let me share with you how important this is to me. I remember studying linguistics as a part of my anthropology major my spring semester of freshman year. My professor advised us to go see a lecture on AAVE, and as cliché as it can be to say this: It changed my life. It truly did; I remember growing up and many of my peers and myself being corrected in school for improper grammar, quite like any other student. To bring forward the notion that while it may not be American Standard English, it does not equate it to being a form of communication with less value, a delightfully radical idea for many of us who were taught that anything besides ASE is wrong and less intelligible. What I gathered from that lecture and my class in general was that languages go through stages and have rules, all of which many languages society deems of a lesser quality or wrong, actually have. And this woman truly expresses this idea in such a beautiful presentation. Please watch!
